Pros and cons of dedicated web hosting

First of all you probably want to know what dedicated web hosting is. Well, it’s easy to explain: you have a dedicated server if a whole web server is dedicated just to you. In other words, you don’t have to share your webspace like you would do on a shared web hosting service.

Ok, so that point is clear. You can rent a dedicated server from your web host for a monthly fee and you can choose from various models with different specifications such as processor speed, RAM and so on – it’s just like a normal PC, just a little bit smaller and without a monitor and stuff like that.

What are the advantages of dedicated server hosting? Whereas you have a lack of security on shared servers, nobody has control over your dedicated server because nobody else except you has access to it of course. Aside from that, you have complete use of all the server resources. If you want you can even resell your webspace e.g. if you run a web agency or something like that.

Sounds good, but what are the disadvantages then? Well, it’s obvious, that a whole webserver is more expensive than just a part of it, so that’s one big disadvantage. The monthly fees are in general about ten times higher than a shared hosting service. The support is another aspect, because some providers assume you have adequate know-how in server management, but normally you get really good support – you have paid a lot for this service anyway.
