My webhosting company allows me to use SSH for my website. Does this mean I could SSH in the Linux os and launch the files need to run the dedicated server? Or is the SSH limited to just the website root directory?

Possibly. You need to read your terms of service with your web host. Many times, even if you have direct SSH to your server, you are not allowed to use it as a certain kind of server. For instance, you might not be allowed to install an IRC server, or a game server.

I desperately need a good reliable honest web host. My sister and I have tried many shared hosts THIS IS NOT WORKING- hosts like powweb simply do not fill our needs. We have a java/php based chat that runs nearly 24/7 that relies on a mysql database and the only other major pull, our php based forum also runs nearly 24/7 that also relies on another mysql database. On shared hosts, we are constantly down due to database problems— these databases are hit so much that our site was taking up others on the shared network so of course we were constantly down. We figure we need a virtual private server or a dedicated one. We only want to run our sites– not worry whether our server is for example, protected with virus software– we need some management in other words. Yes we know this is not coming for an 8 dollar per month powweb price — we are willing to pay— we are just simply tired of picking the wrong host only to be embarrassed by all the down times…. please help and thank YOU!!!!!!!! very much!!

Okay I was not very clear…there are more answers needed. Do I use a VPS or dedicated one? Managed or unmanaged? I do not understand this stuff other than I know I have to have enough of the server’s resources to allow for 2 mysql databases to be hit constantly. I do not want to have to worry pretty much about anything (ie security (antivirus) ) — I just want to be able to load and maintain my site and have loads of fun with it— not the workings in the background — you know, the stuff you don’t see when on an overcrowded shared server-

You can try using a vps, they can certainly work better than a shared host. You will probably want a managed vps or dedicated because otherwise you are entirely responsible for maintaining the os. I have used burstnet.net in the past and they were pretty good, and I doubt you will find a better price.
